She arrived without a sound.

No knock at the door, no entry in the logbook, no explanation. The night staff simply turned around and there she was — sitting perfectly still on the intake bench, those two deep red-rimmed eyes staring straight ahead like she'd been waiting there for hours and had simply decided not to make a fuss about it.

They call her Alba.

She doesn't speak, but she communicates just fine. A tilt of the head when she's curious. A stillness so complete it borders on unsettling when she's not. The little black X stitched below her heart is the only marking on her — nobody on staff put it there, and nobody has asked about it twice.

The heart itself is red and full and sewn on with care. Whatever Alba has been through, she clearly decided a long time ago that she was going to keep it — that heart — even when the world gave her every reason not to.

She's been passed over before. The staff can tell. She watches the door every time it opens and looks away a moment too quickly when it isn't for her.

Condition: Handmade. One of a kind. Temperament: Patient. Observant. Quietly devoted once she trusts you. Special Notes: She will sit by the window every evening at dusk. Nobody taught her that. She simply does.

She's not asking for much. Just someone who'll come back.

Once bonded, separation is discouraged.
