Orphan Asylum Intake Form Case No.: 1001 Status: Awaiting Adoption

He is the oldest case in the file.

Number one thousand and one. The staff aren't entirely sure what came before him or whether anything did — the records from that era are incomplete in ways nobody has been able to explain. What they do know is that he has been here longer than most, settled into his spot with the solid, unhurried permanence of something that has decided it belongs here until it doesn't, and not a moment sooner.

They call him Marrow.

His face is a skull — white, stitched at the edges, worn not as a costume but as a fact. Two red button eyes burn from the sockets with a warmth that has no business being that present in a face like that, and yet there it is, steady and red and completely unbothered by the contradiction. He is large. Substantial. The kind of presence that rearranges a room by existing in it.

The detail that stops every visitor cold is the chest — white ribs mapped across all that black, and there at the center, held in the careful grip of a skeletal hand, a red heart. Not lost. Not abandoned. Held. Deliberately, consciously, with the full anatomical commitment of someone who has had a very long time to decide whether it was worth keeping and arrived, without apparent doubt, at yes.

Whatever Marrow has been through — and the staff suspect it is considerable — he has kept the heart. That tells you everything.

Condition: Handmade. One of a kind. Temperament: Ancient. Grounded. Quietly the most steadfast resident the Asylum has ever processed. Special Notes: He has never been passed over. He has simply never met the right person yet. There is a difference he understands better than anyone.

He has held that heart through everything. He is simply waiting for someone worthy of being handed it at last.

Once bonded, separation is discouraged.
