She arrived smiling and the staff felt immediately better about their afternoon.

Not the complicated smile of someone working something out, not the performed smile of someone making an effort — the orange-stitched, already-settled smile of a creature who selected this expression at some point and has found nothing sufficient to revise it. Cool grey from head to toe, that bright twist of hot pink yarn perched at her crown like something that grew there and decided to stay, those two flower-centered buttons — one pink, one orange-red — looking out at the ward with the warm, unhurried attention of something that finds the world genuinely interesting and has not been given reason to change that assessment.

They call her Phlox.

She is the grey of something cool and considered — not Gloam’s heavy storm grey or Dusk’s twilight grey but the clean, light grey of a morning that hasn’t decided what it’s going to be yet and is comfortable with that. The pink yarn at her crown is the editorial note that changes everything — that small bright tangle of color that says: yes, grey, but also this. Also vivid. Also entirely on purpose.

The chest panel is white — a soft oval, stitched around in orange that warms all that grey — and at its center, a blue heart with a small pink flower pressed into it like something planted there and tended. It is the most layered detail in a creature made entirely of considered layers: grey outside, white panel, blue heart, pink bloom. Each one a different temperature. All of them hers.

The orange X below it matches the smile. She coordinated. She noticed. She cared.

Condition: Handmade. One of a kind.
Temperament: Warm beneath the cool. Settled. The kind of steady cheerfulness that is not performed but simply the natural result of being entirely at ease with oneself.
Special Notes: The pink yarn at her crown has not shifted since intake. The staff have stopped expecting it to. It appears to simply be where it lives.

She is cool grey with a flower in her heart and a smile stitched in orange and she has been waiting, quietly and without complaint, for exactly the right person to notice all of it.

Once bonded, separation is discouraged.
