The staff are beginning to notice a pattern and have chosen not to investigate it. He was simply there — pale and still against the tree line, the same grey-green quiet of birch bark and old bone, those two large black X eyes fixed on the middle distance with the expression of someone who has been sitting with something for a very long time and has arrived, finally, at a kind of peace with it.

They call him Hush.

He is the color of undyed things — natural, unprocessed, the cream of something that came into the world without pretense and has not acquired any since. Where Tallow is warm and present, Hush is cooler, stiller, the color of first light before the sun has committed to anything. He is large in the unhurried way of something that has simply grown at its own pace without anyone asking it to stop.

The chest patch is white against cream — a quiet distinction, a subtle frame around the black heart at its center, which carries its own X like a signature or a seal or a small private joke that he has never explained to anyone. The larger X of his eyes asks no questions. The smaller X on his heart answers none.

Below the heart, one more small X. The third in a series. The staff have stopped counting.

He sits with the particular stillness of something that has learned that silence is not the same as absence — that being very quiet can be its own form of presence, its own form of staying.
