He arrived dressed for an occasion nobody else was aware of.

Top hat. Bat-wing bow tie. A white tuxedo panel buttoned with three precise black buttons down the front, stitched at the hem with the small neat Xs of someone who finishes things properly. He sat down on the intake table with the unhurried dignity of a creature who has arrived exactly when he intended to and finds the question of whether he is early or late entirely beneath consideration.

They call him Dapper.

He is the warm tan of something classic — the beige of old ivory and good leather and things that have been well-made and know it. He is not flashy. He does not need to be. The hat does the announcing. The bat-wing bow tie does the elaborating. Everything else simply holds the ensemble together with the quiet confidence of a foundation that has never once given anyone reason to question it.

His eyes don't match — one black and knowing, one white and wide — which gives him the permanent expression of someone running two simultaneous and equally valid assessments of every room he enters, cataloguing it from both registers at once before deciding precisely how much of himself to reveal.

The answer, thus far, has been: the hat. The tie. The buttons. The Xs. Enough to be unmistakable. Enough to leave you wanting the rest.

He dressed for whoever was coming before he knew who that would be. That, the staff agree, is either the most romantic thing in the Asylum or the most prepared. Possibly both.

Once bonded, separation is discouraged.
