He arrived looking like a secret that had decided to dress well.

The top hat was the first thing — black, precise, worn at the exact angle of someone who has calculated the optimal angle and selected it without apology. Below it, the face: one white button eye clean and direct, one black button eye shadowed beneath a spreading stain of ink that drips from the brim of the hat down his cheek like something that was kept contained for a long time and eventually simply stopped being containable.

They call him Cipher.

He is white — the same clean, considered white as Void and Levity and the others who came from the woods carrying pale exteriors over complicated interiors — but where Void carries darkness at his center and Levity carries lightness in his posture, Cipher carries his darkness asymmetrically. One half immaculate. One half running. The hat holding the line between them like a very elegant intervention that is, at this point, mostly decorative.

The heart on his chest is white on white — outlined in black, crossed through with two bold lines that make an X of the whole thing, a heart that has been marked and sealed and filed and is not currently accepting new paperwork. Below it, a black bow tie worn with the ease of someone for whom formality is not an effort but a native language.

He is, the staff agree, the most composed resident currently dealing with an ongoing situation on his face. He has not acknowledged the drip. The staff have not raised it.

Condition: Handmade. One of a kind.
Temperament: Controlled. Precise. The kind of put-together that is doing considerable work and doing it beautifully.
Special Notes: The hat has not moved. The drip has not dried. Both of these facts have been present since intake and show no signs of changing. The staff have concluded this is simply how he is — half immaculate, half undone, entirely himself.

He sealed the heart and put a hat on and showed up anyway. That, the staff have agreed, deserves considerably more credit than it gets.

Once bonded, separation is discouraged.
