White as moonlight, those two deep black eye hollows regarding the ward with the angular, hollow-cheeked expression of something that arrived from somewhere considerably further away than the woods and has not mentioned where. The stitched grin stretches wide and unhurried — not threatening, not performative, simply the face of a creature that has been grinning since before grinning was fashionable and intends to continue long after.

They call him Bones.

He is the white of something fundamental — not the white of blankness or beginning but the white of things stripped to their essential form, of what remains when everything unnecessary has been accounted for and set aside. He is large and loose-limbed and settled, those long arms and legs arranged with the comfortable sprawl of someone who has made himself at home in every room he has ever occupied and sees no reason to adjust.

The bat at his throat is his one accessory and he wears it with complete authority — small, black, wings spread like a cravat worn by something that shops in a very specific category of establishment. It is the formal note in an otherwise entirely architectural composition. The staff have not asked where he got it. He has not offered.

The small X below it is his quietest marking — a single point of notation on an otherwise unmarked expanse. Simple. Certain. His.
