She did not knock.

The door simply opened and she was there — pale face, long black braids falling past her shoulders like curtains drawn against the light, those two dark lashed eyes taking in the ward with the calm of someone who has seen considerably worse and found it all rather interesting. She sat down without being invited. She crossed her ankles. She held the small dark thing in her arms a little closer and looked at the staff with a red-lipped expression that communicated, without any ambiguity whatsoever, that she would be staying.

They call her Mercurii.

She is white and black in the way that certain things simply are — not as a choice, not as an aesthetic, but as a fact of nature as settled and non-negotiable as gravity. The white collar at her throat is precise. The black of everything else is complete. The red of her lips is the single point of color in an otherwise entirely committed palette, worn like a signature, like a period at the end of a very definitive sentence.

The small dark figure she holds is hers. It arrived with her. It has not left her arms since intake and the staff have not attempted to remove it. Some things belong together and are clear about it.

The lashes are, the staff agree, extraordinary.

Condition: Handmade. One of a kind. Temperament: Composed. Imperious. Capable of a dry warmth that arrives without warning and is more devastating for it. Special Notes: The plants nearest her intake shelf have begun to lean slightly in her direction. Facilities has noted this without comment.

She has not asked for anyone's approval. She never has. She is simply here, which is already more than most people deserve and she knows it.

Once bonded, separation is discouraged.
