He arrived on time. Precisely on time. The staff are not entirely sure how he managed this given that nobody told him when to arrive, but the clock on his chest had already been running for some time before anyone thought to check it.

They call him Ticker.

He is the warm tan of Biscuit and Tallow and the others who arrived in that particular shade — the color of something unhurried, something made without pretense — but where Biscuit is gentle and Tallow is simply present, Ticker carries a mechanism. The deep plum heart on his chest is the most elaborate chest piece in the ward’s history: a silver clock face set at its center with Roman numerals still legible, surrounded by gears — dark, interlocking, caught mid-turn — as if the heart itself runs on clockwork and has been doing so for considerably longer than anyone has been paying attention.

The mismatched eyes tell the usual story in an unusual way — one a deep wine-colored button, round and warm, the other a small dark bead, precise and watchful. One keeping time. One keeping score.

The stitched mouth curves into the suggestion of a smile that lands somewhere between contentment and mischief — the expression of someone who knows exactly how much time has passed and has opinions about how it’s been spent.

The X below the heart is the only simple thing about him.

Special Notes: The gears on his heart do not move. The staff check every morning anyway. This has become a ritual nobody has formally acknowledged.

He has been keeping time since before he arrived. He is simply waiting for someone worth spending it on.

Once bonded, separation is discouraged.
