He was found sitting with his arms already folded.

Not crossed in defiance — folded in the way of someone who has been waiting long enough to get comfortable about it, who has settled into the posture of patience the way a stone settles into a riverbed. Those two enormous black eyes, each with its small red center burning like a coal that refuses to go out, regarded the intake staff with the steady, unhurried assessment of something that has seen considerable weather and found it all survivable.

They call him Gloam.

He is the grey of the hour between dusk and dark — the deep, textured grey of storm wool and old stone and the sky right before it decides what it's going to do. Not Dusk's mottled twilight or Stone's weathered stillness but something heavier, denser, the grey of something that has absorbed a great deal and is holding it all quietly in a body built for exactly that purpose.

He is large. Substantially, reassuringly large — the kind of large that rearranges a room's sense of itself simply by being present in it. His arms are folded around the dark bat he holds at his chest, keeping it close with the deliberate care of something that knows the value of what it carries and has decided, long ago, not to set it down for anyone who hasn't earned the privilege of seeing it.

The red X stitched at his belly is the single warm note in an otherwise entirely composed exterior. Small. Deliberate. His.

The specific comfort of something large enough and steady enough that the world feels measurably less precarious in its presence. Special Notes: He arrived holding the bat. It has not moved. He has been folding himself around what matters for a very long time. He is simply waiting for a home large enough to hold all of him in return.
