Intake #1191 — "Lament"

Orphan Asylum Intake Form Case No.: 1191 Status: Awaiting Adoption

He has been crying for longer than anyone can determine.

The staff want to be clear that this is not a crisis. It is simply a condition — the red running from those two wide white eyes in twin trails down his grey face, pooling at the edges of his expression in a way that has long since stopped being acute and become simply atmospheric. He arrived this way. He is not alarmed by it. The staff have taken his lead on this and arrived, after some adjustment, at a similar equanimity.

They call him Lament.

He is the deep, substantial grey of Gloam's family — the grey of something that has absorbed considerable feeling over a considerable time and carries it visibly, in the body, without shame. He is large and settled and splayed out with the comfortable sprawl of something that has made its peace with gravity and found it an acceptable arrangement.

The seam runs the full length of him — head to belly, stitch by careful stitch — the record of an opening and a closing that was done properly, done well, done with the understanding that what was put back inside was worth the trouble of the repair. At the end of it, offset to one side, a red heart that is itself stitched over with X after X — not to close it off, but to hold it together. There is a difference and he knows it.

The face is the fullest record of a creature who has felt things completely and has not once tried to feel them less.

Condition: Handmade. One of a kind. Temperament: Expansive. Unguarded. The specific honesty of something that has no mechanism for pretending it isn't affected. Special Notes: He and Drip have been placed on opposite ends of the ward. Not for any clinical reason. The staff simply felt the ward needed the balance.

He is not sad. He is full — and has been looking for somewhere large enough to put all of it down, gently, at last.

Once bonded, separation is discouraged.
