He arrived without a single remarkable thing about him.

That is not an insult. The staff mean it as the highest possible compliment. No horns, no wings, no dripping eyes or dramatic hair or chest patches announcing allegiances. Just warm beige, and two enormous brown button eyes that take up most of his face, and a long careful seam running from chin to belly that is the only record of anything he has ever been through. He sat down. He looked at you. He stayed.

They call him Tallow.

He is the color of things that are simply and essentially good — candlelight, worn linen, the inside of something that has been kept warm for a long time. He is not trying to be anything. He is not compensating for anything. He is, in the truest sense, exactly what he appears to be, which in this ward is the rarest and most quietly staggering thing the staff have encountered.

The eyes are the thing. Two large, dark, wood-toned buttons — not dramatic, not unsettling, just present in the specific way of something that is genuinely paying attention. They are the eyes of someone who listens when you talk. Not waiting for you to finish. Actually listening.

The seam down his center is stitched with care. That's all. Just care.
