She came out of the woods red and unhurried and sat down like she had been expected.

Not the deep committed red of Ardor or the wild red of Redd — something warmer, rounder, the red of a thing that has been weathered into a comfortable version of itself and has arrived at this particular moment without particular drama. Those two grey button eyes, mismatched in size, regarding the ward with the mild, clear attention of something that has already taken stock and found the inventory acceptable.

They call her Scarlet.

She is the red of old brick and autumn leaves and things that have been this color long enough that it has stopped being a choice and become simply a fact. She is round and settled and present in the specific way of something that takes up its space without apology and without excess — exactly the right amount of here, held steady.

The heart on her chest is white — the one pale note in an otherwise entirely red composition, worn large and stitched down carefully in black, a brightness kept at the center of all that warmth. It is the detail that stops you. Everything else about her is the same saturated red from head to toe, and then — white. The thing she keeps. The thing that is different from everything else about her and is there for exactly that reason.

All that red and then one white heart — kept carefully, worn openly, offered without conditions. That is the whole of her, and it is more than enough.

Once bonded, separation is discouraged.
