He arrived in full regalia and the staff took a moment.

The pointed hat — white, pom-pommed in red and yellow, brimmed in rainbow rickrack — preceded him through the door by a considerable margin. The rest followed in order: the red hair flanking a face dominated by those two deep blue eyes and one enormous red nose that is not a feature so much as a commitment. The lace cuffs. The pom pom buttons cascading down his front in alternating red and yellow. The rainbow trim running the perimeter of everything that has a perimeter.

He sat down. He looked at the ward. The ward looked back.

They call him Carnivale.

He is white — the white of a blank canvas that has been very thoroughly worked — and on that white, everything. He is the most fully realized resident the Asylum has ever processed, which is saying something given the current population. Where Giggle is lean and Jolly is hot pink and Dapper is architectural, Carnival is comprehensive. He has not left anything out. He has considered every element and included it.

The blue eyes beneath the brim are the detail that lands — large, dark-centered, glass-bright, looking out from under all that festivity with the particular steady gaze of someone who has been the most colorful thing in every room for a very long time and has developed, through that experience, a profound and genuine understanding of what lies underneath the performance.

The nose is red. It is the reddest thing in the ward. It is entirely intentional.

Condition: Handmade. One of a kind.
Temperament: Maximalist. Sincere. The specific depth of something that chose celebration as its native language and has spoken nothing else so long it has become fluent in every register of it.
Special Notes: The hat has remained perfectly upright since intake. The staff have stopped noting this as unusual and started noting it as simply correct. Some hats belong exactly where they are.

He is not performing. He simply arrived this way — fully, completely, without reservation — and has been waiting for someone who understands that all of this is not the mask. It is the whole, true, glorious face.

Once bonded, separation is discouraged.
