He arrived with that single orange button eye fixed forward, the pink socket around it giving him the permanent look of someone who has just witnessed something remarkable and has not yet decided whether to be impressed or annoyed. The wild black tufts atop his head suggest the question is ongoing.

They call him Cinder.

He is the grey of something that has been through considerable heat and come out the other side — not broken, not soft, but changed in the specific way that things change when they have burned and cooled and found themselves still here regardless. His face is a record of that history, stitched across in careful lines that he wears without embarrassment and without explanation.

The heart on his chest is small and red and patched on like an afterthought that turned out to be the most important thing — the detail that almost didn't make it but did, stitched down firmly as if to say: this part stays, whatever else goes.

The staff have noted there is another grey resident who arrived around the same time, similar in many ways, different in the particulars. Whether they know each other, the records do not say. Neither has commented.
