The purple bat bow cresting her head like a fascinator she selected with complete intentionality, the one purple button eye fixed forward with the focused energy of someone who has a destination and has decided today is the day.

They call her Wren.

She is grey in the same way Cinder is grey, which the staff find either coincidental or significant and cannot agree on which. But where his grey reads as settled, hers reads as kinetic — the grey of storm systems and gathering weather, of something that has been still long enough and has things to do.

The bow is the telling detail. Worn at the crown, lavender against all that charcoal. Not for flying — or not only for flying — but as a statement of the specific kind of freedom she has decided to claim going forward, regardless of what came before.

The red heart is stitched on and slightly ragged at the edges in the way that hearts get when they have been genuinely used.

They have also not been observed not interacting. The staff are monitoring the situation with interest.

She has bat wing and a direction and a heart that has already survived everything that tried to stop it. That turns out to be more than enough.

Once bonded, separation is discouraged.
