Nobody laughed when he arrived. He found this hilarious.

He came in white as fresh greasepaint, red hair erupting from the top of his head like something that gave up being contained some time ago and has not looked back since. The red markings swept across his face in the classic arrangement — brow, cheek, the suggestion of a nose — worn not as costume but as credential. Those two yellow button eyes, bright and slightly feverish, took in the intake ward with the expression of an audience member who has seen this show before and knows exactly how it ends.

They call him Giggle.

He is a clown in the way that certain things are exactly what they appear to be and mean it completely. No irony. No distance. No winking acknowledgment that clowns are considered unsettling — or rather, complete awareness of it and total indifference, which amounts to the same thing and is somehow more effective.

The balloon on his chest is enormous and red and held with both hands like a prop in the best possible sense — something produced at exactly the right moment for maximum impact. The small ruffle at his collar is his one concession to tradition. He wears it with dignity.

He has made three staff members laugh against their will this week alone. He considers this a successful intake.

Condition: Handmade. One of a kind. Temperament: Relentless. Warm. Aware that he is a lot and has decided that is the correct amount. Special Notes: He has never once explained the joke. The staff have agreed the joke might be all of us, delivered with genuine affection.

He's not here to scare you. He's here to remind you that laughter and unease have always lived in the same house — and he's perfectly comfortable in both rooms.

Once bonded, separation is discouraged.
