He arrived upright, arms slightly raised, two black button eyes with their orange X centers fixed forward with the focused intensity of someone who has a point to make and intends to remain on his feet until it lands. The long seam of stitching running from his chin to his belly is the map of a journey he has clearly already completed and does not feel the need to explain.

They call him Ember.

He is orange — the deep, committed orange of something that glows from within, the orange of late October light and cooling coals and the last hour before everything goes dark. It is not a subtle color and he is not a subtle creature, which the staff agree is a form of honesty they find deeply refreshing.

The small black patch on his chest is the detail that makes the staff pause. His face runs with stitches — across the cheek, down the center — worn with the matter-of-fact ease of someone who has been through the needle and come out the other side entirely themselves.
