She arrived quietly, which is the only way she does anything.

No dramatics. No grand entrance. She was simply there on the intake bench one morning, pink and round and impossibly soft, two dark button eyes blinking with the patient, unhurried expression of someone who has decided that the world moves at whatever speed it moves at and she is perfectly content to wait for it. The staff almost missed her. Almost.

They call her Blush.

She is the pink of something genuinely tender — not the pink of performance or decoration but the pink of the inside of a hand, of something that has never once tried to be harder than it is and considers this a reasonable life choice. She is small and she is round and she is so thoroughly, disarmingly soft that three separate staff members have picked her up during difficult shifts and quietly put her back without mentioning it to anyone.

The heart on her chest lives inside a dark circle like something framed and deliberate — a pink heart with small marks pressed into it, worn not on the outside of her but set back slightly, like a thing she keeps just far enough in to protect but close enough to the surface that you can still see it if you look.

She asks for nothing. She expects nothing. She simply sits, and waits, and is exactly what she appears to be, which in this ward is rarer than any of the horns or wings or stitched-shut mouths.

Condition: Handmade. One of a kind. Temperament: Gentle. Undemanding. The kind of presence that makes a room feel safer without doing anything in particular. Special Notes: She is the most borrowed resident in the ward during difficult nights. She is always back by morning. The staff have an understanding.

Not every orphan arrives with a story that needs decoding. Sometimes they are simply, completely, quietly good — and that is more than enough.

Once bonded, separation is discouraged.
