He shows up every autumn without fail.

The first time, the staff assumed he was seasonal — a temporary resident, a visitor passing through on his way to somewhere more festive. They made up a bed anyway. That was three years ago. The bed is still his. He has not moved on. He simply sits, round and orange and extraordinarily patient, holding his little jack-o-lantern sign like a man who has made his peace with waiting and would simply like you to know he is still here.

They call him Hollow.

His head is burlap — rough and stitched and honest in the way that only things made from practical materials can be. Two solid black button eyes sit wide above a mouth sewn into something between a grimace and a grin, the kind of expression that has stopped trying to be one thing and settled comfortably into being both. The burlap collar around his neck is frayed at the edges, worn the way something gets when it has been through many seasons and intends to go through many more.

The patches on his orange body are not wounds. They are repairs. There is a difference he feels strongly about.

The jack-o-lantern he holds is his own — carved, grinning, lit from within by something the staff cannot explain and have stopped trying to.

Condition: Handmade. One of a kind. Temperament: Steadfast. Unhurried. Genuinely delighted by October in a way that does not diminish in the other eleven months. Special Notes: He has been here through three Halloweens. He does not seem discouraged. The staff find this either inspiring or heartbreaking and cannot agree on which.

Every year the season comes back around. This year, so should he — in a home that finally keeps him.

Once bonded, separation is discouraged.
