It spelled out two words — hello and goodbye, in that order — and then stopped. By morning he was simply there, dark and compact and utterly still, those two red-rimmed eyes weeping slow crimson drips down his face like he's been crying something thicker than tears for a very long time.

They call him Séance.

He carries a ouija planchette on his chest like a medallion, like a passport, like proof of where he came from — decorated with skulls and split cleanly between hello and goodbye as if he has never been entirely sure which one applies. The staff have noticed he seems to arrive at conversations at exactly the right moment and leave them before you realize he's gone.

The eyes are the thing. Red and running, black button centers staring forward with an intensity that suggests he is not merely looking at you but through you, and possibly at something standing just behind you that you would rather not turn around to confirm.

He is not frightening. He is simply informed. There is a difference, and he is patient about explaining it to those willing to listen.
