She did not come through the door so much as arrive through it.

There is a distinction. The door opened, and suddenly the room was different — brighter, louder in some frequency the ears don't quite catch, more alive than it had been thirty seconds prior. Hot pink from head to toe, bat wings fanned out behind her like she grew them herself over a long weekend, green button eyes absolutely blazing with the energy of something that has never once considered the possibility of being ignored.

They call her Briar.

She stands. She does not sit still. Sitting still is for residents who are waiting — Briar is not waiting, she is arriving, continuously, at every moment, in every room she occupies. Her arms are out, her wings are up, and the bright green heart on her chest is worn like a crest, like a flag, like a declaration filed in triplicate and notarized.

She is the only resident in the Asylum's history to have made the plants in the common room visibly perk up. Facilities noted it in the maintenance log. Nobody has offered an explanation.

The bat wings are not for flying. The staff are fairly certain about this. They seem to be more architectural — a statement of presence, a flourish, proof that she takes up exactly as much space as she is supposed to and not one inch less.

Condition: Handmade. One of a kind. Temperament: Electric. Untameable. Generous with her energy in a way that makes the whole ward feel less grey. Special Notes: She has rearranged her intake shelf three times. The staff have stopped moving things back.

The Asylum has never had anything quite like her. Neither has anywhere else. That's rather the point.

Once bonded, separation is discouraged.
