Orphan Asylum Intake Form Case No.: 1256 Status: Awaiting Adoption

The lights in Ward 3 flickered three times before anyone saw her.

She was standing — not sitting, standing — in the center of the room, wings spread just enough to make the point, those two enormous red eyes burning in the dark like something that had been watching long before anyone thought to look back. The night nurse wrote a single line in the incident log and then went home early.

They call her Vesper.

She is, without question, the most dramatic resident the Asylum has ever processed. The wings alone — dark and ragged and cut through like lace, like something beautiful that has flown through too many difficult things — command every room she is in. The two wild tufts atop her head suggest she is either perpetually startled or perpetually unimpressed, and close observation suggests it is somehow both simultaneously.

But there, small and red and carefully stitched against all that darkness, is her heart. Tiny relative to everything else about her. Worn right on the surface where anyone can see it, two small marks pressed into it like a quiet admission: yes, I feel things. I simply feel them at altitude.

She doesn't need rescuing. She needs a perch.

Condition: Handmade. One of a kind. Temperament: Commanding. Atmospheric. Unexpectedly tender once the wings fold in. Special Notes: She is drawn to windows, dark corners, and people who don't startle easily.

She has always been able to leave. She's simply waiting for somewhere worth staying.

Once bonded, separation is discouraged.
