She was found between the skulls.

That's what the intake report says, and the staff have chosen not to elaborate further because there is no elaboration that makes it less unusual. She was simply there — pale as lavender smoke, those two glass eyes wide and guileless inside their black heart-shaped hollows, sitting with the calm of something that has been in stranger places and found them perfectly tolerable.

They call her Hollow-Heart.

She is almost entirely white, which makes the black of her — the deep heart-shaped eyes, the enormous black heart stitched across her chest — land like punctuation. Like the universe drafting a sentence in the lightest possible ink and then underlining the part that matters.

The eyes themselves are something. Not button eyes, not sewn eyes — glass, round, faintly luminous, the kind that catch light from sources that aren't entirely accounted for. They are wide and they are gentle and they look at you the way very old things sometimes do, with a patience that has long since graduated from waiting into something closer to simply knowing.

The black heart is large. Larger than expected. Worn not like a badge but like ballast — like something she carries because she must, because it keeps her here, because without it she might simply drift.

Condition: Handmade. One of a kind. Temperament: Ancient-feeling. Tranquil. The unsettling kind of peaceful that comes from having already made one's peace. Special Notes: The skulls she was found between have since been moved to separate ends of the ward. They would not stay apart. Facilities has stopped trying.

She holds a dark heart with both hands and offers it openly. That's either the bravest thing in the Asylum or the most haunting. Perhaps both.

Once bonded, separation is discouraged.
